When you get the call that someone has been arrested, the first problem is simply finding them. Here is how to locate someone in custody in Palm Beach County and make sense of what you find.

Start with the county inmate search

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office maintains a searchable list of people currently in custody. You will generally need the person's last name, and a first name or date of birth helps narrow it down. Records typically appear once booking is complete, which can take a few hours after the arrest itself.

If they do not show up yet

A missing record usually means one of three things:

• Booking is not finished. This is by far the most common reason. Check again in an hour or two.
• They are in a different jurisdiction. An arrest in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, or Jupiter may route through a municipal facility first. Federal arrests do not appear in county systems at all.
• The name is spelled differently. Try the legal name rather than a nickname, and check for hyphenated or maiden names.

How to read the booking record

Once you find the record, a few fields matter more than the rest:

• Booking number — the unique identifier for this arrest. A bondsman will ask for it.
• Charges — listed by statute, often abbreviated. The charge level drives the bond amount.
• Bond amount — if it shows $0 or "no bond," a judge has not set one yet, or the charge is not bondable.
• Facility — where they are physically being held.

What "no bond" means

Seeing "no bond" is alarming but often temporary. It usually means the person has not been to first appearance yet, which happens within 24 hours. In some cases — certain violent charges, probation violations, or immigration holds — a judge must rule specifically before any release is possible.

What to do once you find them

Write down the booking number, the charges, and the bond amount. That is everything a bondsman needs to start. If the bond has been set, you can begin the paperwork immediately and post at any hour. If it has not, you can still get the application ready so nothing is waiting once the judge rules.
